Davao Light Kaibigans roll up sleeves to help the homeless build a home

November 17, 2015

Being able to buy a new home gives one a feeling of satisfaction. Taking part in building a home for the homeless gives many a sense of fulfillment.

Last September 5

, instead of doing the usual office work, around 112 Davao Light and Power Co. employees rolled up sleeves to help construct houses for the Gawad Kalinga (GK) beneficiaries in GK Village, Relocation Site, Los Amigos, Tugbok District, Davao City.

Dubbed as Kadayawan Bayani Build, the activity, which was organized by GK, was aimed at building houses for the homeless through "Bayanihan". Around 14 duplex houses were built through the help of volunteers from various private companies, which include Davao Light, and donors coming from abroad and from local communities.

The spirit of volunteerism was felt everywhere despite the scourging heat of the sun. Even women, young and old, joined in the Bayanihan line passing through one by one heavy hollow blocks and sacks half-filled with sand.

Aside from these, the volunteers as well fostered camaraderie with the beneficiary-community and co-volunteers.

The true essence of volunteerism here is not just the time spent for this endeavor but the heart of the volunteers to offer help without expecting for any return. Once again, it has been proven that nothing is difficult if done through teamwork. I'm just very glad we found home in Gawad Kalinga that gives hope to homeless communities.

” said Arturo Milan, Davao Light's EVP and COO.

It was indeed a tiring day for everyone. But seeing the happy faces and gestures of gratitude from people who will soon have their own homes was such a fulfillment.

Our help doesn't just end here. We will make sure that these people will not only live a home but will also learn how to live in a place where dreams are made to build better future.

” added Milan.
