Pawikan hatchlings released, two more nests discovered

Six turtle nests were already discovered at the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park at Sitio Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya, Davao City halfway through the year 2022.

Among the six nests, the first and fourth nests were transferred to higher ground after strong waves threatened to wash away the eggs from where they were laid along the shore. The park’s staff built makeshift hatcheries from reusable containers to incubate the eggs in.

Fortunately, 124 out of 168 eggs from the first nest hatched on May 12, 2022. The release of the hatchlings was witnessed by JCI Davao Inc., which is one of the partners of Davao Light Power Co. Inc. and Aboitiz Foundation Inc. in their efforts to conserve the nesting ground of the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles.

Various organizations and media were also present during the release such as 819 Squadron, Coast Guard Auxiliary District Southern Mindanao, DXDC 621 RMN Davao, PTV Davao, JCI Duwaling, Next BPO Solutions Inc., and Davao Light employees and their families.

Moreover, on the same date of the first batch of hatchlings’ release, a mother pawikan was spotted laying eggs at the park. Amazingly, she was confirmed to be the same pawikan that was seen nesting at the park last April 10, 2022 and was tagged as PH0565. The sea turtle eggs are expected to hatch after 2-3 weeks from the date they were laid.

Davao Light and Aboitiz Foundation continue in its efforts to conserve the environment in line with one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which is to protect life below water.
