Working Together for a Safer and Greener Workplace: The Cross-BU Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Audit Program

Since its launch in 2023, the Cross-BU Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Audit Program has enhanced our approach to managing safety and environmental performance across AboitizPower sites. As of June 2025, we have successfully audited 24 sites, helping teams identify strengths, close gaps, and share best practices.

Each audit covers critical areas such as:

  • Compliance with legal requirements related to SHE
  • Adherence to AboitizPower standards on:

    • Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
    • Effluent Management
    • Permit to Work
    • Contractor Safety
    • Incident Management
    • Road Transport Safety

  • Implementation of Business Unit-specific Safety, Health, and Environment policies and procedures

To guide action and prioritization, audit findings are categorized into four levels:

  • Level 3: High-priority findings with the greatest potential impact on safety, the environment, compliance, reputation, or operations.

  • Level 2: Moderate-risk findings that require timely corrective action.

  • Level 1: Low-risk observations that still benefit from attention and improvement.

  • GIO (Generally In Order): Areas where practices are sound and often reflect best-in-class implementation.  These are worth replicating across other sites.Importantly, the grading of findings is based on risk, not just compliance. This includes the risks of injury, environmental damage, non-compliance, reputational harm, and operational disruption. Findings may also reflect patterns of activity that suggest gaps in awareness, attention, or control over significant risks and environmental impacts, serving as critical early signals for improvement.

In the last three years, the observations are as follows:

What makes this program unique is its collaborative approach: audits are conducted by a group of subject matter experts in SHE from different business units of AboitizPower. By learning from each other, we’re building stronger, more consistent practices across the organization.

The audit process itself includes worksite observations, face-to-face interviews, and document reviews, providing a complete view of both on-the-ground execution and system-level effectiveness.

At its core, the Cross-BU Safety, Health, and Environment Audit Program is more than just a compliance check—it’s about making Safety, Health, and Environment visible, felt, and lived every day. It strengthens our culture of care, accountability, and continuous improvement across all sites, all teams, and all levels of the organization.
