Powering to be You: AboitizPower’s Journey Toward True Belonging

In industries such as energy, breaking down systemic barriers can sometimes seem daunting. The sector has traditionally been male-dominated and technical, leaving women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other underrepresented communities on the sidelines. At AboitizPower, we see this not as a challenge to avoid, but as a call to action.

We recognize that transformation must begin from within. For us, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are not optional add-ons—they are essential to building a workplace where everyone, regardless of identity or background, can thrive. Building a culture rooted in DEIB strengthens employee engagement, fosters innovation, and enhances our ability to attract and retain top talent—all of which are critical to long-term business success. Our journey began with one simple truth: to create lasting change, we had to be intentional.

Here are some of the key milestones that have shaped our DEIB journey so far:

Sparking change from the ground up—early efforts that helped shape a more inclusive AboitizPower.

1. Grassroots Beginnings (2019): Our legal team spearheaded the first company-wide diversity and inclusion campaign, sparking momentum with educational forums, inclusive events, and storytelling initiatives.

2. Healthcare Equity (2021): We expanded HMO coverage to include common-law and same-sex partners, ensuring equal access to medical benefits across all identities.

Accomplished leaders from AboitizPower and partner organizations speak at an event supporting the formalization of the company’s DEIB policy.

3. Formalization of DEIB (2023): We launched our first official DEIB Policy and partnered with organizations such as the Philippine Business Coalition for Women's Empowerment and the Philippine Financial & Inter-Industry Pride to develop a more deliberate strategy.

4. #EverydayPrideDay Campaign (2023): Beyond Pride Month, we shared the stories of LGBTQ+ employees year-round, normalizing inclusion as part of daily life.

At a recent Pride event, an AboitizPower representative shared insights on the importance of meritocracy and its role in fostering fairness and opportunity.

5. Language & Representation (2023): DEIB content was translated into local dialects, and internal communications began including preferred pronouns to affirm identity and belonging.

6. Visible Participation (2023): AboitizPower participated in the Philippine Pride March and launched campaigns highlighting women engineers (#BABAEngineers) and multiculturalism within the workforce.

In a POWER Talk episode, AboitizPower DEIB advocates engage in meaningful conversations to create initiatives that uplift diverse voices and celebrate individual strengths.

7. Empowerment Programs (2023): Through initiatives such as “I Am Remarkable” and POWER Talk, we encouraged underrepresented voices to take up space and celebrate their contributions.

Today, AboitizPower stands proudly with a workforce that is 33% women, more than double the global average for the energy sector. We’re 3,000 strong, powered by a majority of millennial and Gen Z talents, with an average tenure of nearly seven years. But numbers only tell part of the story. What truly defines us is the culture we’ve built—one grounded in meritocracy, belonging, and shared progress.

Looking ahead, we’re rolling out a five-year DEIB journey map, strengthening our internal DEIB committees, and launching foundational and advanced training programs on inclusive leadership, allyship, and unconscious bias. Our ‘Power Through DEIB’ campaign will amplify these efforts through branding, storytelling, and expanded external engagement, including our new membership with the Philippine Business and Disability Network.

Because at AboitizPower, we don’t just generate energy. We generate momentum for equity, for empathy, and for a future where everyone can be their best selves.
