A gift of play to an Ata Manobo community in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte

The sheer joy shown through the smiles of the Ata Manobo kids is very infectious as they play in their newly turned-over playground facility from AboitizPower subsidiary Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. in Sitio Talos, Barangay San Jose, Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte.

The facility is one of the sustainability initiatives of Davao Light and is made from repurposed or used wooden electrical poles. It provides a fun venue for the children, especially the Ata Manobo settlers in Sitio Talos, to develop their social and motor skills that support their growth, development, and learning.

In addition, the project will help promote eco-tourism in the new tourist sites developed in the area.

“We hope even during this pandemic, the children still get to play outdoors subject to, of course, the required physical distancing and wearing of masks. We believe in safety and protection but we also believe that our children need to do exercise in a fun way especially through play,” said Davao Light President and COO Engr. Rodger S. Velasco during the formal turnover last October 21.

The turnover of the playground was received by Sto. Tomas Municipal Administrator Atty. Elisa D. Evangelista-Lapiña together with Barangay Kagawad Datu Pepito Tumaytay, and Indigenous Political Structure Head/Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative Head Datu Doming Tumaytay.

Atty. Lapiña personally thanked Davao Light for the donation as it will give additional highlights to the eco-tourism site of Barangay San Jose.

This initiative advances AboitizPower’s advocacy to drive change for a better and more sustainable world and hopes to bring joy and laughter to the kids of the Ata Manobo community, even amidst the new normal.
