Cebu City school gets new e-learning center

Best friends Blanch Marie Luage and Hyacinth Mari Ditan, grade 6 students at Labagon Elementary School, share the same passion for reading.

Both of them are vying for honors in their graduating class as well.

“Reading empowers us and activates our imagination,” Blanch said.

To which, Hyacinth added: “It also transports us to the different places we read about.

Reading and learning are about to get more exciting for students like Blanch and Hyacinth after the Visayan Electric Co. (VECO) and Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (AFI) gave an early Christmas gift to Labangon Elementary School.

Last Dec. 4, VECO and AFI officially turned over to the school its newly-build e-learning center.

VECO and AFI transformed an old container van donated by Gothong Southern Shipping Lines into a learning space equipped with iPads, an Apple TV, and a 50-inch LED TV. The school also provided books as their counterpart contribution to the project. The e-learning center is strategically located under trees so students can enjoy fresh air while studying.

Dr. Bianito Dagatan, Cebu City schools division superintendent, lauded VECO for its commitment to helping improve the country’s education system.

At the same time, he challenged the students and the school administration to use the tools given to them to level up academic performance.

VECO Chief Operating Officer Anton Mari Perdices, for his part, said he hopes the school and its students will maximize the facility.

The e-learning center is VECO’s third project in Labangon Elementary School. VECO donated a three-storey, three-classroom building in 2010 and upgraded the school’s electrical wiring system in 2017.

The learning facility is the second of its kind that VECO and AFI donated to DepEd. In 2016, Mabolo Elementary School received its own e-learning center.

VECO is the second largest electric utility in the Philippines. It serves the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, Naga and four municipalities of the greater part of Metro Cebu -- Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla and San Fernando.

Since 1905, VECO has been a partner of Cebu’s progress by advancing business and communities. The non-energy community outreach programs of VECO are key in promoting education, environment, and community development within its franchise area. The Corporate Social Responsibility activities of VECO are geared toward guiding the youth, the future movers of our nation.
