The AboitizPower Oil Business Unit (BU) marked a milestone in 2021 for being the first in the AboitizPower Group to be conferred with the ISO 50001:2018 “Energy Management Systems (EnMS)” certification.

With the EnMS certification in place, the Oil BU is poised to improve its performance by promoting efficiency, reducing energy costs associated with electricity and fuel consumption, and continuing to comply with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act of 2019 (Republic Act No. 11285) and Department of Energy Circular No. 2021-01-0001 .

“This certification is a testament to AboitizPower Oil BU’s commitment to the continuous improvement of its energy performance,” AboitizPower Oil BU President and Chief Operating Officer Aldo Ramos said.

An audit for the certification was conducted by DQS Certification Philippines in December 2020, also issuing the same certification in March this year to the Oil BU’s six facilities ― Cebu Private Power Corporation, East Asia Utilities Corporation, and Therma Power Visayas, Inc. in Cebu; Therma Marine, Inc. in Maco, Davao de Oro and Nasipit, Agusan del Norte; Therma Mobile, Inc. in Navotas, Metro Manila; and its administrative office in Malabon City.

According to DQS Certification Philippines, the implementation of an energy management system and the identification & analysis of all energy-related considerations make the flows of energy transparent, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and helps save cost, among others.

“The rising cost for energy, the need to handle resources responsibly, and the increase of global trade all require new and concrete approaches to energy usage in through and deed,” DQS said, adding that stringent legal requirements for climate protection and the incentives offered by various aid programs have also pushed sustainable energy management concepts to gain significance.

The AP Oil BU manages and operates the oil-fired power generation assets of the Aboitiz Power Corporation. Its facilities — which include two land-based power facilities operated by Therma Marine, Inc. (TMI) in Maco, Davao de Oro and Nasipit, Agusan del Norte; as well as power plants operated by Cebu Private Power Corporation (CPPC), East Asia Utilities Corporation (EAUC), and Therma Power Visayas, Inc. (TPVI) in Cebu — are ready to provide peaking capacity in Visayas and Mindanao whenever necessary.
