SacaSun boosts community-based DRRM in San Carlos City

In celebration of the National Disaster Resilience Month in July, three barangays from San Carlos City, Negros Occidental strengthened their disaster preparedness measures and plans during a Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction Management (CBDRRM) Workshop recently organized by San Carlos Sun Power Inc. (SacaSun) and Aboitiz Foundation, Inc.

Last July 25 to 26, around 55 officers from Barangays Punao, Bagonbon, and Palampas learned the basic terms and concepts, framework, hydromet hazards, geohazards, community mapping, risk assessment, and development of a BDRRM plan and evaluation.

“Risks are part of our life. If this cannot be eliminated, then we need to identify and create plans to mitigate these concerns and bring them to a manageable level,” SacaSun Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Supervisor John Bryan Landicho said in his opening remarks.

Meanwhile, San Carlos City DRRM officer Joe Recalex Alingasa emphasized to his fellow community members that the workshop conducted with the help of SacaSun and AFI is not to create alarm and panic, but it is about promoting awareness and vigilance.

In addition to the CBDRRM workshop, SacaSun also provided furniture and equipment for the recently-inaugurated Punao Barangay Hall to further their community service and disaster preparedness.

The two-day workshop was co-facilitated by the WeatherPhilippines Foundation, Inc. and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Western Visayas.

SacaSun owns and operates the 59-megawatt peak solar power facility located within the San Carlos Economic Zone in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. The power plant is AboitizPower’s first foray into solar power generation and the company’s first venture in the Negros Island region. It is committed co-create safe, empowered, and sustainable communities through its various corporate social responsibility programs, community sponsorships, and ER 1-94 projects.
