Hedcor, Inc. and Luzon Hydro Corporation, run-of –river hydropower companies, organized a two-day medical and dental mission to the residents of Poblacion and Ampusongan in the remote municipality of Bakun, Benguet.
More than 500 Bakun residents were catered to during the mission in the community before the end of the year 2014. The free medical and dental services were made possible in partnership with the Rotary Club of Baguio and the Bakun Medical team.
Medical services included pediatrics, minor surgical procedures like circumcisions and biopsies, medical check-ups, and consultations. Dental care services included basic dental treatments such as tooth extractions and prophylaxis. Medicines and vitamins prescribed by the volunteer doctors were provided free of charge to the patients. Medical and dental supplies used in the mission amounted to P200,000. Moreover, the dental services drew a long line among the children and adults in the community, which even lasted until 7pm on the second day of the activity.
Staff of the hydro corporation added fun to the event by organizing games for the youngsters. Oral care kits were given as prizes, emphasizing to the kids the importance of having clean and healthy teeth and gums.
Providing healthcare services is one of the ways Hedcor and LHC give back to their host communities. The hydro firms also have initiatives that focus on livelihood, education, and environment throughout the year.
The municipality of Bakun shelters three run-of-river hydropower plants of Hedcor namely the Ferdinand L. Singit, Lon-oy and the Lower Labay hydro power plants. Hedcor is the leading run-of-river developer in the country, supplying 170MW of clean and renewable energy in the Philippines since 1978.
