TWENTY engineering students of two Cebu City universities received scholarships from AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Visayas, Inc. (TVI) and the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (AFI).The scholars, who are in their fourth and fifth year in mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering courses at the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) and University of San Carlos (USC), got full tuition, allowance money for books and monthly stipend for the school year 2016-2017.The awarding of scholarship certificates was conducted last Aug. 4 in separate ceremonies at CIT-U and USC-Main Campus. On the same day, parents and guardians of the scholars signed a memorandum of agreement stating their commitment to support their children so that they would be able to maintain the required grade and keep TVI’s support.TVI will evaluate the scholars’ academic performance at the end of the first semester to determine if they will qualify for the scholarship in the second semester of school year 2016-2017.During the ceremonies, the scholars thanked TVI and AFI for helping them fulfill their dreams.Nineteen-year-old Mary Antoinette Chua, a fourth year chemical engineering student of USC, said that the scholarship will ease the financial burdens of their parents, many of whom have other children to send to school.  “This (scholarship) also gave us more motivation to study, to do better, to have more confidence and to go beyond what is being asked (of us) to show you that this opportunity you have given us is deeply appreciated,” Chua said to TVI officials present during the ceremony.“As Aboitiz scholars, we will practice the core values of integrity, teamwork, innovation, and responsibility,” she said on behalf of her fellow scholars.Alexander Asuncion, AboitizPower corporate services head (generation group), pointed out that the Aboitiz Group believes that quality education plays a critical role in the country’s economic development.Edgardo Nicolas, TVI corporate social responsibility manager, said that the purposive scholarship program aims to establish a pool of young, competent and trained engineers who can efficiently run and maintain the coal-fired power plant.TVI is building a 340-MW (gross) power plant in Toledo City using clean coal technology. The plant, which is expected to enter commercial operations in early 2018, will feature circulating fluidized bed boilers, coal dome and electrostatic precipitators, among others, to ensure that the power generation facility conforms with environmental standards.
